Half-way point

The Dennys have surpassed their previous sugar-free time period. Congrats, did you know you still have more than 12 weeks to go?

Kyle:  yep, I know. And I’m excited. This stretch has got me to lose more than 10 lbs and, more importantly, I have been able to maintain my weight.

Plus I still have a few sugar-free desserts I can’t wait to make. And we will be loosening the ropes on our California trip.

We aren’t going to be running for the pixie sticks or donuts (I wish!) but a few treats that use artificial sweeteners will be allowed. Just for that week. Then no more artificial sweeteners and definitely no sugar.

Melissa:  It is starting to become a lifestyle and we are starting to think about how this is going to play out in the future.  I feel like there is a real possibility we will slide back into our sugar lovin ways.  We often say things like “Oh, we can have that in May” or “once we aren’t sugar free anymore.”

We have started to craft a real plan about how we can carry this forward and not become sugar addicts again.  I am pretty darn excited about that.

Also after much reflection and disappointment, I have banned myself from the scale.  I haven’t weighed myself in about a month but clothes are looser and people are commenting saying they have noticed I am losing weight.  I will have to get on the scale this week though.  I have the 4th weigh-in of my 6 month diet bet.  I won the first month but have not met the required weight loss for the last 2 months.  I really don’t think I am there this month but I will keep you posted.  I really want to get into the final month because that is when you can win the majority of your money back.  Last time I won $240!

Weeks in Review

Kyle:  Things have been good. We tried a fantastic new product. Sweet Drops by SweetLeaf which is a liquid stevia. A drop (or two) in coffee adds a delicious flavor.

Haven’t really went out. I really – REALLY – want a donut. I found a sugar-free, no artificial sweetener doughnut. I am excited to make that next week. Thank you Pinterest!

I am feeling great. This added energy has been great for marathon training. I wake better every day. Pushing Hadley in the stroller hasn’t been a struggle. I can’t wait for this weekend. I run up Denver’s Republic Plaza. It is the Fight for Air Climb which raises money for the Lung Cancer Association. Me and a friend will be climbing the 56 floors, more than 1000 stairs, to the top and have raised over $300.

So it’s not just sugar-free that has me energized!

Melissa:  I am actually starting to like coffee without creamer!  This is huge because I used to drown my coffee in tons of creamer until it was almost white.  This added tons and tons of sugar and you could barely taste the coffee.  Now I actually taste the flavor of the coffee and we have been experimenting with different flavors and roasts of coffee.  Dunkin Donuts makes some great flavors.download-1

We decided to try some no sugar added yogurt from Menchies this week.  They always have 2 flavors in the rotation that have no added sugar.  Our choices were Strawberry or Caramel.  We sampled each flavor and liked both of them.  We both chose the Strawberry.  I topped mine with sliced bananas and Kyle crushed almonds.  We were shocked when we went to pay and our creations were a couple dollars cheaper than we normally pay when we load up with all sorts of toppings, sauces and whipped cream.  We were both extremely satisfied with our no sugar added treat and thoroughly enjoyed every bite (at least the ones Hadley didn’t steal)!

Recipe of the Week

Fudge Brownie Bites

We added homemade whipped cream and used the frosting as a chocolate sauce to drizzle over the top.  Who knew sweet potato based brownies could be so chocolatey and delicious.
